WORST FOODS FOR MEMORY LOSS

PLUS A UNIQUE NUTRIENT THAT INCREASES BRAIN ENERGY BY 8-9%

Harvard nutritionists and brain experts warn seniors to avoid these 5 foods that ‘weaken memory and focus’

No matter how old you are, it’s never too late to start eating in a way that gives you the best possible chance of staving off cognitive decline as you age and making sure that you feel focused and sharp every day.

Breakthrough research done at Harvard Medical School shows how our gut bacteria can trigger metabolic processes and brain inflammation that impact memory after eating certain foods.

These studies point to the idea that we may be able to reduce the possibility of cognitive decline by avoiding foods that can compromise our gut bacteria and weaken our memory and focus.

Processed Proteins

Proteins are the building blocks of muscles and are essential for the proper functioning of your brain and body – but not all proteins are created equally.

Processed proteins are found mainly in meat products such as cured bacon, salami, sausages, pepperoni, hotdogs, ham, bologna, and canned meat.

When meat is processed, it is transformed through curing, fermenting, smoking or salting in order to boost flavor and shelf life. As such, processed meat contains various chemical compounds and preservatives that are not present in fresh meat. Many of these compounds are harmful to health.

One large 2021 study performed in Britain, for instance, concluded that for every additional 25 grams (or about one ounce) of processed meat in a person’s daily diet, the risk of cognitive decline increased by 44 percent – posing negative effects on memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities*.

The concern with processed meat is that it can increase inflammation in the body, in part by altering the microbiome of the gut. The gut bacteria interact with our immune system and eventually lead to chronic inflammation – which not only affects cognition, but also blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and more.

For this reason, eating a lot of processed meat products for a long period (years or decades) may increase the risk of cognitive decline and other chronic health conditions.

At the end of the day, you should limit your intake of processed foods as much as possible and base your diet on fresh whole foods. When it comes to processed meats, it’s best to limit or completely avoid consumption and instead choose Organic grass-fed meat sources.

Refined sugar and artificial sweeteners

The brain uses energy in the form of glucose, a form of sugar, to fuel cellular activities. However, a high-sugar diet can lead to excess glucose in the brain, which studies have linked to memory impairments and less plasticity of the hippocampus – the part of the brain controlling memory*.

Consuming unhealthy processed foods like baked goods and soda, which are often loaded with refined and added sugars – often in the form of high-fructose corn syrup – floods the brain with too much glucose.

Even seemingly healthy foods like yogurt, canned or dried fruits, and granola bars contain hidden sugars that cause massive glucose spikes.

So, what about artificial sweeteners?

While artificial sweeteners can help circumvent big blood sugar spikes, they pose unwanted side effects.

In a 2017 report published in Nutritional Neuroscience, the common artificial sweetener aspartame was found to be linked to various behavioral and cognitive problems, including learning difficulties, headaches and migraines, anxiety, depression and insomnia. Aspartame also acts as a chemical stressor that can increase cortisol, causing weight gain, blood vessel damage and plaque buildup, which is also hard on the heart.

Artificial sweeteners like aspartame are known to overstimulate the neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers, in the brain. Excessive amounts can damage neurons and cause cell death, which are associated with memory issues.

Alternative options to sweetening foods and beverages include raw local honey, pure organic maple syrup, monk fruit and stevia. Like any form of sugar, however, these natural options should be consumed in limited quantities.

Alcohol

Alcohol may be a pleasant accompaniment to dinner when taken in moderation. But excessive intake might negatively affect the brain, causing brain shrinkage and metabolic abnormalities.

Alcohol impairs short-term memory by decreasing the communication between nerves in the hippocampus. The hippocampus serves a crucial function in memory formation and maintenance.

Chronic alcohol abuse disrupts neurotransmitters, which are chemicals used by the brain to communicate.

Furthermore, Vitamin B1 deficiency is common in chronic drinkers. Vitamin B1 is a vital vitamin that is good for memory; its deficiency can lead to a number of brain disorders.

Disturbing studies also reveal that drinking alcohol daily can literally shrink your brain.

Researchers studied MRIs of more than 36,000 middle-aged adults and compared the scans with their reported alcohol intake. The researchers found the more alcohol consumed was associated with a more pronounced decline in brain volume, regardless of other factors*.

Adults over the age of 50 who drank more – 1½ beers or glasses of wine daily – had changes in the brain as if they had aged 3½ years, the researchers say.

Despite wine being touted as having beneficial health properties, it is still a form of alcohol, and its risks associated with brain health do not outweigh the benefits.

To keep your brain healthy and productive, our best advice is to avoid drinking alcohol altogether or at the very least limit intake to rare occasions only.

High-mercury seafood

Years ago, eating a piece of fish didn't come with concerns for whether there were any contaminants. But unfortunately, thanks to pollution, the fish on your plate can have the same unsavory and toxic items that we found in the ocean – think methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dioxins.

Methylmercury (a toxic mercury compound) in particular is accumulated in fish through its life cycle. It is first absorbed by phytoplankton, or algae, which is then consumed by smaller marine animals, smaller fish, and eventually larger fish. So over time, all animals of the sea can contain some methylmercury, although certain species contain more than others.

Like fish that accumulate mercury via their diet, humans, too, can store mercury in their body if they eat ample mercury-containing fish.

Why is this a problem? Methylmercury is a toxic metal. And while a small exposure has not shown to offer a huge health threat, too much exposure can result in mercury poisoning, with effects like hearing, vision, and coordination challenges.

Mercury is a metal that can potentially damage a person's central nervous system, or the brain and spinal cord. When the central nervous system is damaged, a slew of outcomes can occur, including things as mild as feeling a headache to experiencing memory loss or muscle weakness. So, if you are eating way too much fish, you are potentially taking in too much mercury and can unknowingly cause damage to yourself.

Thankfully, there are some ways that people can enjoy fish without worrying about eating too much mercury...

Choose options that are considered to be lower in mercury – typically smaller fish like anchovy, black sea bass, catfish, flounder, haddock, mackerel, pollock, salmon, sardine, and freshwater trout. Limit intake to 2-3 servings of fish and shellfish a week.

If you stick with the recommended quantities of lower-mercury fish, they will not only reduce the risk of mercury poisoning but also reap all of the health benefits that eating fish can offer.

Vegetable and seed oils

Found at your typical grocery store, these clear, tasteless, highly refined and processed oils include corn, soybean, canola, safflower and sunflower oils.

We were all trained that vegetable oils were good and butter was bad. Very few studies, however, have challenged that claim – until now.

The major problem with these oils is that they are all heavy in omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-6 is a kind of fat that can impair cognitive function if consumed in large amounts.

Omega 6 fats not only fuel your body’s inflammatory pathways, but also reduce availability of anti-inflammatory omega 3 fats in your tissues, resulting in more inflammation in the brain and body.

In other words, omega 6 fats undo any benefit eating omega 3s would normally give you.

Now, a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports links the consumption of canola oil in the diet with worsened memory, worsened learning ability and weight gain. The study is the first to suggest that canola oil is more harmful than healthful for the brain*.

A separate study showed soybean oil not only leads to obesity and diabetes, but could also lead to negative neurological conditions like cognitive decline*.

What’s worse – According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, these toxic oils are by far the most widely produced and consumed edible oils in the U.S. They’re used for fast food frying, added to packaged foods, and fed to livestock.

Which is why it’s more critical than ever to read your food labels and always choose grass-fed products over grain-fed products.

Bottom line: We’ve got to move away from these inflammatory fats.

And instead, choose fats that support your brain and body.

In fact, there’s a plethora of research that suggests eating the right fats to be one of the most powerful things you can do to promote ongoing cognition and well being.

What types of oils and fats should we choose that protect our brain and body and reduce inflammation?

  • Extra-virgin, cold-pressed, organic coconut oil – my personal favorite because it is excellent cell fuel, is highly anti-inflammatory and may help with improving your cholesterol panel
  • Extra-virgin, cold-pressed, organic olive oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Grass-fed butter

Can fat really be good for my brain?

Natural fats offer powerful benefits to your body – and your brain.

Your brain is comprised of about 60 percent fat.

Because our brain is made up largely of fat, our brains need fat to work well.

In fact, billions of cells rely on fat to operate optimally. Without healthy fat, our brain doesn’t function as well. And when our brain is not operating at a high level, well we all know how that affects the rest of our lives.

Fueling your brain with fat, in particular, encourages ketosis, which provides energy to the brain and helps protect against brain degeneration, among other health benefits.

By far the most well studied type of fat that does this are naturally occurring fats called medium-chain triglycerides, or MCTs derived from coconuts.

Compared to the long-chain triglycerides found in other vegetable oils, MCTs are smaller and, consequently, more readily absorbed and metabolized – qualities that make them a good source of fuel for the brain.

MCTs are unique among fats in that they don’t require bile salts for digestion or extra energy for absorption, use, or storage.

This makes MCTs one of the fastest, most effective fuel sources for the brain.

How MCTs nourish the brain

The brain cannot store energy, so it needs a constant and steady energy stream that’s normally supplied by blood glucose.

Fortunately, there’s a backup energy source for the times when blood sugar level gets low.

When needed, your liver can break down stored body fat to produce ketones.

Ketones readily cross the blood-brain barrier to provide instant energy to the brain.

When MCTs were given to adults with mild cognitive impairment, they experienced significant improvement in memory recall within 90 minutes of taking their first dose*.

And while you can provide ketones for your brain by eating a very high-fat, low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet, you don’t have to.

The medium-chain fats in MCT oil (and its main source, coconut oil) raise the blood level of ketones, thus providing a convenient workaround.

The brain benefits of MCTs

There are a few proven ways MCTs benefit the brain.

  • Taking MCTs have been found to increase brain energy by 8 to 9%*.
  • MCTs can delay brain aging by promoting the repair of brain cell damage, especially when combined with a diet rich in healthy fats*.
  • MCTs can help optimize intestinal flora which is surprisingly important to brain health*.

Your good gut bacteria produce dozens of neurotransmitters, brain chemicals used by brain cells to communicate with each other.

Notably, two important feel-good neurotransmitters — serotonin and dopamine — are created mainly in your intestines.

Good bacteria also reduce brain inflammation, now thought to be a possible root cause of depression*.

Other Medically-Recognized Benefits Of Coconut-Derived MCTs

The benefits of coconut-derived MCTs don’t stop at brain health.

Further evidence shows us that MCTs may also help support metabolic health and weight loss.

✔︎ Accelerate Fat Loss & Reduce Waist Circumference:

One study had participants consume either MCT oil or olive oil to see which fat would help them lose more body fat. Researchers noticed that those consuming MCT oil also reduced their body weight, lowered their total fat mass, and decreased abdominal fat and waist circumference*.

✔︎ Target Belly Fat:

In a double-blind, controlled study examining the long-term effects of medium-chain triglycerides consumption on overall health, researchers discovered weight loss was “significantly greater in the MCT group.” They also noticed that subcutaneous fat in the abdominal region was also reduced with MCTs*.

✔︎ Appetite Control:

A study published in the journal Physiology & Behavior examined the effects of MCT oil on satiety (the feeling of being full) and food intake. It found that MCTs had even greater satiating properties than raw coconut oil itself*.

✔︎ Help Regulate Blood Sugar:

MCT oil helps balance out your blood glucose levels. This, in turn, decreases oxidative stress and inflammation in your body. High blood sugar has been associated with major diseases because it causes inflammation. According to a study, diets high in MCTs increased insulin sensitivity in people suffering from type 2 diabetes*, thereby improving their prognosis. One small Chinese study of 40 people with high blood sugar found that those who consumed MCTs daily not only had significant reductions in body weight, but also in insulin resistance*.

✔︎ Prevent Future Weight Gain

Another body of research shows that since MCTs are processed so much quicker than long-chain triglycerides, they have a very low tendency to deposit as body fat*. When study participants were given MCTs in one trial, the results conveyed that the subjects increased their ability to burn fat, improved their energy expenditure, and lost more adipose body fat compared to those who didn’t take MCTs — and kept it off.

Studies have shown that in just a few weeks, people taking MCTs dropped more pounds, losing weight around their hips and waist as well as the more dangerous fats around our organs (visceral) compared to those having other healthy fats*.

In fact, abdominal obesity (aka belly fat) is one of the trademark characteristics of a condition called metabolic syndrome — which is a known precursor to many other chronic diseases.

The most astonishing finding is that many participants using MCTs who were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome at the beginning of the trial were cleared of this diagnosis once the trial ended.

MCTs for heart health & immunity function

As the research behind MCTs continues, science proves that this unique fatty acid can serve as a powerful catalyst for a variety of cardiovascular and immunity-boosting benefits as well.

✔︎ Provide Antimicrobial Benefits

Studies show that medium-chain fatty acids can act as natural antibiotics, which means they boost your immune system to better fend against harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.

✔︎ Promote Cholesterol Health

Since MCT’s boost weight loss, this in turn helps reduce your risk of heart disease. Moreover, a study of 24 overweight participants found that taking MCTs for 29 days reduced total cholesterol by 12.5%*. The same study also found better reductions in LDL or “bad” cholesterol when MCTs were added to their diet.

✔︎ Destroys Bad Bacteria & Viruses

Due to their chemical structure, these fatty acids are drawn to and easily absorbed into most bacteria and viruses. MCTs enter the lipid membrane and weaken it to the point that it eventually breaks open, expelling the microorganism’s insides and causing imminent death. White blood cells then quickly dispose of the terminated invader’s remains.

Overall, the clinical evidence is clear — MCTs have proven to be effective for helping people restore cognitive vitality and lose unwanted weight.

Not to mention, improving many of the key health markers associated with maintaining a higher quality of life as we age.

Taking the next steps for your brain and body

Whether or not you decide to take supplemental MCTs to support your brain and body, I urge you to minimize your consumption of foods that worsen cognitive function and overall health.

Limit or avoid processed meats, high-mercury seafood, alcohol, refined sugars and high-glycemic carbohydrates.

Steer clear of highly processed vegetable oils like canola, sunflower, and soy oil. These supposedly healthy oils have been a health disaster.

Swap out existing vegetable oils for coconut oil, the main dietary source of MCTs.

Using coconut oil as a food and adding a supplemental form of MCTs into your diet will give you the best chance of reaping therapeutic benefits.

How to use MCTs

Not all supplemental forms of MCTs are created equally.

Before you go adding MCT oil into your morning coffee, there are drawbacks that make daily MCT oil use a bit challenging.

Namely, digestive distress.

Many people experience gut discomfort (diarrhea or “the runs”) when taking oil-based forms of MCTs. Due to its concentration, users of liquid MCT oil are warned to stick with small doses as the oil-form can cause uncomfortable digestive issues including cramps and irregular bowel movements.

On the other hand, the powder form of MCTs provides a controllable “slowed” release of MCTs, making it much more tolerable for your gut. Thus you can take greater amounts of MCTs, and even double the body & brain benefits compared to the conventional liquid oil-form.

For this reason, we’ve developed a convenient powder form of MCTs to provide all of the benefits of MCTs with none of the digestive discomfort.

MCT Oil Powder is Excellent

Doris Bleecher

Since I started using this product in my morning coffee I have felt more alert and that I have not been craving snacks like I used to. With the stress of the quarantine, I tended to want to eat more, now I feel full most of the day and as a result more energetic. I have my husband taking it now as well along with NativePath Collagen. We are both in our early 70s and I felt we needed to boost our immune system, get out in the sun and walk more to be strong during these scary times.

Good Stuff

Dan S.

One of my friends uses a few of NativePath's products and she is always asking me to give the MCT a try. She said no more complaining about cravings unless I at least try it out. I finally took her up on it and it did not disappoint, it also helped that she bought me the jar so I really had no excuse. I started adding to a smoothie in the early afternoon and practically overnight my pre-dinner cravings vanished. I'm a fan!! And....now a paying customer! :)

My secret weapon...

Joey

Since starting to take this daily in my smoothies I've noticed an increased sharpness. I don't drink coffee, I know lots of people put it in their coffee, but I put it in my smoothies. I also take the krill oil, turmeric, and probiotics from this company. Just ordered the collagen. Looking to collect them all. ;)
