1.) Vegetable / Soybean Oil:

When you see a bottle of oil labeled "vegetable oil," it's almost always soybean oil.


The label says “vegetable” so manufacturers can substitute any oil necessary—soy, corn, cottonseed, canola—without having to print a new label.


Soybean is the #1 consumed oil in the United States because it’s cheap and was once thought to be healthy. You’ll find soybean oil in nearly all margarine and shortenings, mayonnaise, prepackaged high carb snacks, salad dressings, several frozen foods, fake dairy, fake meat.


This is the first cooking oil you’ll want to toss in the trash since it’s guaranteed to be highly processed…refined, bleached, and deodorized before it is considered “safe” for human consumption. 


However, during the processing, these oils are pushed past their heat tolerance and actually become RANCID…


Because soybean oil contains high amounts of a type of fat called linoleic acid…


When exposed to heat (either through processing, cooking, storing, or shipping), linoleic acid is oxidized, and when you have a lot of oxidized compounds in your body, you put yourself at risk for multiple health conditions.*

2.) Corn Oil: 

There is a popular misconception that corn is a vegetable. It is actually a grain. Corn originated and was bred from a tall grass-like plant that somewhat resembled wheat.


The oil derived from this plant is relatively cheap, which makes it a popular option for everything from margarine to salad dressing to deep-fried foods. The bad news is, corn oil contains high amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially omega-6 fatty acids…


An imbalance of omega-3 fatty acids to omega-6 fatty acids has been proven to fuel harmful inflammation throughout your body and also cause damage to your liver.


And if you're curious what an overabundance of these fats means for your weight…


Your body transforms omega-6s into what are known as endocannabinoids, which are a part of the signaling system that controls your appetite, feeling of hunger, and energy and fat storage. 


When your body produces more of these signaling agents than you require, the feeling of hunger is not switched off when it ought to be, leading you to eat more than you need to.

3.) Sunflower Oil: 

Sunflower oil also contains high levels of omega-6 fatty acids…which as we’ve covered, cause inflammation in the body. Continual inflammation can lead to health problems such as heart disease, memory loss, poor immune system function, and obesity.


The Journal of Hazardous Materials* also reported that when exposed to heat, sunflower oil produces higher levels of aldehyde compared to other plant-based cooking oils…


Aldehydes are TOXIC substances that can make someone vulnerable to multiple health risks including liver disease, nephropathy, coagulation disorders, and nervous system disorders.*


Sunflower oil is a popular choice among restaurants for frying, and with each re-use, the aldehydes become more concentrated and the risks compounded.

4.) Canola Oil: 

To create canola oil, manufacturers have to take crude oil that has been heat extracted from rapeseed (what canola oil is made from) and refine, bleach, and deodorize it. 


Just like soybean oil, the fact that canola oil is processed under high heat causes it to go rancid, which then creates the need for industrial carcinogenic bleaches and deodorizers like hexane.


The Environmental Protection Agency has released a warning that short-term exposure of humans to high levels of hexane* causes mild central nervous system effects, including dizziness, giddiness, slight nausea, and headache…


So imagine what it can do when you consume it on a regular basis?!


Even though the rapeseeds that canola oil is made from contain omega-3s fatty acids, these fatty acids are fragile and subject to oxidation through heating… 


If you think about it, other oils that are high in omega-3s would never be used for cooking. Fish oil and flaxseed oil are high in omega-3s, but are never heated because they are sensitive to oxidation. If you look at a label of a flax seed oil bottle it will say not to heat it.


Unfortunately, people have been told for so long to avoid saturated fats and replace them with refined oils that they have an imbalance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids. Is it any wonder that heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the US?

5.) Grapeseed Oil: 

This one may be a big shocker for a lot of people…since grapeseed oil is constantly marketed as such a healthy cooking oil. 


Grape seed oil is processed from the seeds of grapes, which are formed as a by-product of wine making.


The health claims for grape seed oil are based on the supposedly high amounts of nutrients, antioxidants and polyunsaturated fats…


But the bad news is... most of the nutrients and antioxidants (including the proanthocyanidins) from grape seeds are not present in the oil.*


After it has gone through the intense chemical extraction process, most of the good stuff has been filtered out.


Not to mention, what you’ve previously been taught about the “health” benefits of polyunsaturated fats is actually completely untrue…


Because as we’ve discussed, oils high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fats like grape seed oil are very fragile and therefore prone to oxidation. When oil oxidizes it creates free radicals which can also lead to cancer, inflammation, hormonal imbalance, and thyroid damage. 


Even cold-pressed grapeseed oil may not be harmed during processing, but it is still high in omega-6s.

6.) Partially Hydrogenated Oil: 

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 540,000 deaths each year can be attributed to the intake of industrially produced trans-fatty acids.


High trans fat intake increases the risk of death from any cause by 34%, coronary heart disease deaths by 28%, and coronary heart disease by 21%.*


The primary source of unhealthy trans fats in a person’s diet is partially hydrogenated oil, which can be found in:

  • Nondairy coffee creamer
  • Stick margarine
  • Frosting
  • Snack foods
  • Commercial baked goods, such as cakes, cookies and pies

These artificial trans fats are created through an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid…
